From Spain to Portugal

We decided on a late morning in Santiago de Compostela today, strolling through the old town and having breakfast at Costa Vella Garden Cafe. It was so picturesque, and I made many new feathered friends who cleaned up my plate after we left. We took the train to Vigo, then Valença. Being a border town, Valença didn’t seem to have too much to offer, and we took the train to Viana do Castelo. And I’m so glad we did. What a beautiful hidden gem. Gorgeous architecture, history and seafront. We ended up at a Bib Gourmand restaurant called Tasquinha da Linda where we blew the weekly food budget on a seafood platter but it was worth it. Everything was delicious. And Terry learned to enjoy the feeling of mastery that comes with having to work to get to your food, even though there was the occasional shellfish-in-eye. We were served goose barnacles, a Portuguese delicacy. They look like little dinosaur feet, and are nicknamed Lucifer’s fingers for their menacing appearance, but they are tasty! On our way to the hotel, we walked through the Republican square for some late night ambiance. We hope to see the Santa Lucia sanctuary on the hill up close tomorrow.
