And so it was that the last big push was in front of us. 24k of Highland hiking and hi-jinks. We had a quick and light breakfast and headed out feeling refreshed and ready to go.

The scenery was even more beautiful and the weather was on our side once more. After an initial tough climb the mountains and valleys opened up their arms once more and we marched happily into their embrace and onwards to the finish line in Fort William.

We made the usual “nei, men…” pauses to interact with the local wildlife (which this time included lots of butterflies and the occasional hawk), pick berries and smell assorted flowers which didn’t slow our pace too much. The day flew by and before we knew it we were on paved roads strolling through the centre of Fort William.

After congratulating ourselves on our achievement we celebrated with pizza and beer, both delicious and (both consumed in record time) and washed it all down with a whisky.

We then made our way to our lovely wee guesthouse which came complete with a hot tub, which our aching bodies made good use of.

The West Highland Way was a marvel and I find myself once again in awe of this beautiful country, its lands and people’s and the bonnie lassie by my side.
I’m going to miss walking the Highlands of Scotland, but I’ll be back. Hopefully sooner, rather than later.
