3 days in Santa Barbara were over and San Luis Obispo was next. It has once been voted the happiest town in America. Amtrak took us there after a short breakfast at the Goat Cafe right by the tracks. A couple hours later we arrived early to a closed hostel and waited in a nearby park. The hostel is known for its sourdough pancakes which we will have tomorrow morning. Our room was described as cozy, which I think was a euphemism for tiny. There was about a 15 cm clearance around the bed and we took turns opening our suitcase on the bed. Lack of AC was also noticeable since the temperature had risen and was now over 30 C. Maybe the hotel in Santa Barbara had spoiled us and made us fussy. Time to go back to basics. A quick shower later, we went to Higeuroa street, SLO’s Main Street speckled with shops, restaurants and cafes. Our dinner place was Novo, prized for its outdoor seating. It reminded me a bit of the places along Akerselva in Oslo. We finally sampled (a whole bottle+) of local wine from Paso Robles and SLO. Good food, and good service – service you will not find in Norway. Although you have to tip here, it’s worthwhile because the personnel are so much friendlier and helpful in America. The night continued at a “speakeasy” although the term was very loosely used since it was exceptionally easy to find and not hard to get in whatsoever. The beer flight was good, and the band was good individually, but seemed to not always be playing the same tune or rhythm together. A round of shuffleboard was also called for to round off the evening.
