Hanauma Bay and Waikiki fireworks

Terry had managed to secure reservations to Hanauma Bay, one of the best snorkeling places on the island. And it held its promise. Not only did we see numerous colorful fish and coral, but a monk seal visited the beach for his afternoon nap. These seals are endangered and only 1100 exist in the wild, with only about 60 in Oahu where we are. They are protected by law and the lifeguards set up a perimeter around the sleeping seal for both his and our protection. He seemed quite undisturbed and chill as he stayed there the rest of the afternoon. There were also mongooses (no, not mongeese) scavenging for food in people’s bags while they were out snorkeling. These little critters are so cute, but will steal your food if left unattended. Of all the American states, they only exist in Hawaii.

We grabbed a couple malasadas before riding back on the bus. These are Portuguese doughnuts without holes. Norwegians will find them identical to “berlinerboller”. Our next item on the agenda was the Waikiki fireworks. Every Friday evening they do this! We strolled down to the beach and along with hundreds of others we watched a spectacular five minute fireworks show over the ocean.
