New Year’s Eve

A full program awaited us today. After a decadent breakfast buffet, all the guests gathered outside the castle for a walk through the ancient woods surrounding the estate. And as if by magic, it started snowing.

We drank from St. Olav’s water source which was supposed to give you good eyesight. We agreed it mostly gave us a muddy taste in the mouth. A little further along, there was goulash soup with all the trimmings and whatever drink we preferred. For those who were so inclined (Terry), there was clay pigeon shooting. And he made a clean round! Impressive. No actual pigeons were hurt during the activity, mind you.

Back at the castle, they had heated up the wood fired bathtub so we jumped in, and after boiling away for a while we continued to the sauna.

It was then time to get ready for the last evening of the year. We were greeted with more champagne, and sat down for a 4 course dinner with wine – and champagne. After dinner, there was a duo on stage before we all gathered outside to count down and watch the fireworks – with another glass of champagne. The estate owner had a fun speech in his top hat and sporting a cane. As you do when reside in a castle.

Have you kept count? I believe there was a total of 8 glasses of champagne during the two days.

I recommend everyone to try this fairy tale experience. So many friendly people, delicious food and wine, and a terrific program. And who doesn’t like to feel like royalty for a weekend?
